What is UT-Austin smoking?

A while back, UT Austin posted a curatorial position for British and American Literature in the Harry Ransom Center. That posting carried a salary of $50,000, but the search evidently went nowhere, since the position was recently reposted. Generally, after a failed search, you'll see the job creep back out on the market with a higher salary figure, but this reposted position actually lists $42,000 as the salary. What?! Look at the posting and tell me what fool would ever work for a salary anywhere near that if they actually had the qualifications sought. UT might as well put a "we'll settle for a mediocrity" on the posting, since that is implied by this ridiculous salary figure. If the university won't give the library more than that for the position (come on, UT has a massive endowment), don't waste our time by posting it!

  • I am always dumbfounded by the requirements for some academic positions. There was one at Berkeley that wanted a PhD and an MLS AND that had a second language requirement, which had to be non-Romance. The salary was $38K. In the Bay Area.

Thank you so much for the sweet comments and I'm going to add a link to your blog
